Starbird Construction surprised last year's champions Angels by the score of 7-6 in the KonaBaseball.com league opener Sunday 4/7/02 at Kona Old Airport Field A. Mark Sater, a pitcher who has gone to the MSBL World Series for the last three consecutive years, went the distance for Starbird.
In the second game, the Mariners' bats came alive as they routed Canardlys 15-5. Former professional pitcher Larry Elenes (Houston Astros organization) recorded the win for the Mariners.
Expansion team Active Steel had a
bye and starts its season next Sunday.

Last year's champions Angels returned to form as they overpowered Canardlys 12-4 in the morning game. Oscar Delgado pitched a winning performance over veteran Randy Hill, who was also very effective despite taking the loss.
In the afternoon contest, expansion team Active Steel made an impressive display in their debut. They were sparked by youth players Donald Goings and Marcus Hathcock who started their team's inaugural game with solid, back-to-back singles off of former major league pitcher Larry Elenes, certainly a thrill for both youngsters.
The Steelers also received strong contributions from new-to-the-league Phil Davis, fulfilling the needed senior role on the expansion team. But in the end, Elenes and the Mariners proved to be too powerful for the upstart team by a final score of 15-5.
Unbeaten Starbird Construction had the bye this week.
It all happens again this Sunday at Kona Old Airport Field A (behind the gym) at 9:30 and 1:00, and several player openings still remain for the 2002 season.

The Steelers maintained their reputation for effective lead-off hitting as Marcus Hathcock went 2 for 3, scoring both runs for his team. But the offensive story of the day was at the top of the Starbird's lineup: Willie Moore, Brandon Ackles and Mark Dereschio, who combined for a massive ten runs scored.
Canardlys had the bye, but many of the players showed up to
watch the action. The number of ladies in attendance also
increased this week as Kona enjoys its men's hardball league.

Making up for last week's rainout, the Angels game against Active Steel was replayed Mother's Day, May 12th. A different day, different weather, and different pitcher for the Angels meant a different start for the Steelers (who had taken an early lead last in last week's rainout) but a final result for Active Steel that is oh-too familiar - a loss, this time by the score of 11-1 to the Angels.
Jorge Perez went the distance for the Angels, striking
out 6 Steelers and holding the KonaBaseball.com expansion team to
only one run. Oscar Delgado lead the Angels' offensive attack,
batting 3 for 4 with a double.

The 1:00 game gave undefeated Starbird Construction a great opportunity
to stamp its mark of authority atop the KonaBaseball.com league
standings. The Angels had other ideas, and wanted to avenge their
first-round loss to Starbird. That's exactly what happened as the
powerful Angels' batters steadily picked away at the "junk" pitches
offered by Starbird Construction's Mark Sater (4-1). Meanwhile, the
clever pitching of Angels starter Gerardo Ibarra (2-0) kept Starbird
at bay all afternoon. Jorge Perez (1-0) earned a save by pitching the
final inning in relief for the Angels, snuffing out a late Starbird
rally in an exciting game for first place - final score, 6-5.

Shiloh Chenoweth pitched well for Active Steel, earning the win. Mariners' losing pitcher Larry Elenes was also effective, but suffered a fourth inning barrage of hits by the Steelers (who batted around for first time in their team's brief history).
As good fortune goes, later in the day, the Steelers stepped out of last place when Canardlys
lost their game.
The Canardlys went into the seven innings before they could score their first run
against winning pitcher Gerardo Ibarra (3-0). All told, it was "too little - too late"
as the Angels lofted themselves into undisputed first place ahead of idle Starbird
Construction (who had a bye this week).
Pitching depth turned out to be the difference as the three-time MSBL
World Series veteran Mark Sater (5-1) came to the rescue of Starbird starter
Morgan Kruger-Burgess (1-0), who had somewhat of a rocky outing. Steelers'
pitcher Chris Arena (0-2) was effective into the seventh inning, but ran out
of gas as Starbird Construction rallied to win, 13-9.
Co-leaders of the league Angels took to the field in the afternoon against
a hungry Mariners team, rebounding from a couple of painful losses in recent
weeks. In the upset, catcher J.D. Campbell lead the Mariners offensively,
and former professional pitcher Larry Elenes (4-2) was at his usual top
form to pick up the win, 6-4.
Normally, the heart of the Angels' batting order is a nightmare for any pitcher, even
for a former major league hurler. But on this day, Elenes struck out several players
who very rarely see strike three, including Adrian Villanueva and even Jesse Guzman (who,
amazingly, fanned twice!).
In addition to the celebration on the Mariners' bench, the fanfare continued among the
spectators, a group of Starbird players who now claim sole possession
of first place with the Mariners' victory over the Angels.
In the afternoon game, fifth-place Canardlys gave first-place Starbird Construction a real
run for its money in what many felt was the best KonaBaseball.com game of the season, full
of fine defensive plays by both sides. Scoreless until the fifth inning, each team managed
one run, a tie which held up until the Starbirds' final at-bat. Once again, the Starbirds
demonstrated to the league why they now claim the championship of the first half of the
2002 season.
This time, however, they had to call upon
Morgan Kruger-Burgess (1-0) to rescue the
league's top pitcher
Mark Sater (6-1) from a fifth-inning jam, to win by the final
score of 3-1 over also-effective
J.R. Mori (1-2), who took the heartbreaking
loss. Canardly's
Lui Sales went 4 for 4 at the plate
and managed to advance to
third base twice, but each time, his teammates could not cash in for a score.
While the morning game was being played, one of our KonaBaseball.com official scorekeepers
was busy participating in the Kona Marathon.
Katherine Donovan finished a
respectable 65th place in a field of over 800 women in the race and was the
among the top ten finishers of women from the Big Island. The league
extends a special thanks to
Dave Summers who took over the scorekeeping duties.
The
second half of the season starts next week as
MVP Sports joins the league as
a sixth team. Games are scheduled at Old Airport Field A for 9 A.M., noon & 3 P.M., and
admission is free.
In the nine o'clock game, the top two teams from the 2002-A season faced off. This
time, however, it was the Angels' turn to prevail as
Jesse Guzman (1-0) pitched a
winning performance over Starbird Construction's
Mark Sater (6-2), statistically
the top pitcher in the league.
Brandon Ackles spoiled Guzman's shutout
in the sixth
inning, tagging up on a fly ball after smacking a double and stealing third base.
Adrian Villanueva scored twice to lead
the Angels to victory, 3-1.
The real thrill of the day was the triple play pulled off by the Angels in the third
inning.
Oscar Delgado snagged Ackles' line-drive
at second base, stepped on the bag
to eliminate
Tyler Roy, then threw
Morgan Kruger-Burgess out at
first base "by a mile".
In retrospect, Delgado could have performed an unassisted triple play (the ultimate
defensive play in baseball) by merely tagging Kruger-Burgess who was hung out to
dry between bases. It's amazing that such a fleet footed trio of players could get
caught in a triple play.
All the while, Steelers' pitcher
Shiloh Chenoweth (2-2) was also effective, and
Todd Gilmore's bat continued to be hot as
the Steelers took a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning. By
then, however, Chenoweth's pitch count extended beyond his arm strength, and the
Steelers' bullpen could not contain the flood of scoring that ensued. Power hitters
like
Benny Alcoran and former HPA star
Bully Fergerstrom (soon to start his college
baseball career at U.H. Manoa) began a barrage of hits as MVP Sports won by a final
tab of 12-3.
The KonaBaseball.com league takes next Sunday off in observance of the Independence
Day holiday weekend. Play resumes on July 14th and admission is free. In the 9:30 A.M.
game, new-to-the-league MVP Sports faces Starbird Construction (the 2002-A season champs)
in a test of the startups' strength and depth. At one o'clock, the always-hungry Mariners
will be looking to keep atop the second-season league standings against an aggressive
Active Steel team of sluggers, a team that has proved that it can be a winner, once it
remedies its recent pitching woes.
Attired in sharp-looking gold and purple uniforms, the
new-to-the-league MVP Sports team remained undefeated and
put the KonaBaseball.com league "on notice" that they are the
team to beat in the 2002-B season. Pitcher
Ikaika Baptiste turned
in a spectacular performance for MVP Sports, muzzling
the Starbirds all morning and taking a no hitter into the final
inning. However, with only two outs remaining, Starbird's
Brandon Ackles singled
to spoil the otherwise perfect game.
Starbird Construction's
Mark Sater
admitted that this outing wasn't his
best, but he would rather be lucky than good, walking away with the
victory.
The Mariners started off well, but then suffered from a barrage of MVP hits
co-mingled with Mariners' fielding errors. Player/manager
Mike Harris
injured himself in a close play at second base and had to leave the game. With no
other players left on the bench, the Mariners turned to the only player on their
roster who had not yet appeared in a game this season ... team
co-sponsor (Island Tech Office Equipment)
Craig Hanna, Sr.
The Mariners said that they had been waiting all season for the right
moment to turn to their "secret weapon". In the next inning, a sacrifice bunt was
needed in order to move runners over from first and second.
Hanna
executed a perfect bunt down the first base line, but was called out for stepping
on home plate while the bat was in contact with the ball. The Mariners' rally fizzled, and
despite a correct call by the umpire, the underdogs' partisan crowd issued a bronx cheer.
Once again,
Shiloh Chenoweth
was highly effective on the mound, teamed up with catcher
Butch Chatfield
who, before the first inning expired, had thrown out two of the
Angels' base runners. Winning by the score of 9-4, the Steelers are
definitely on a roll. On the other hand, the Angels (league champions in 2001)
must now regroup and sharpen their play if they hope to repeat their success
in this year's finals.
The afternoon contest, the final scheduled game before the playoffs
turned out to be a real nail-biter as the lead changed hands several
times. Knowing that the Angels had already won, the pressure fell on
the shoulders of the Active Steel players who suddenly found themselves
faced with the possibility of falling two notches to fifth place.
Their opponents Starbird Construction, 2002-A season champions, had
already clinched top seed in the playoffs, but were equally committed
to a win after walking a rocky road in recent weeks.
In extra-innings, the Steelers rallied to win 6-5 as
Fran Miller
scored the winning run on
Marcus Hathcock's game-ending base
hit. Steelers'
pitcher
Shiloh Chenoweth
went the distance for the win over
Morgan Kruger-Burgess
(the former Kealakehe High School standout, now off to further his
education and to play college ball in California).
However, the real pitching story of the day was that of
Jim McManus
who pitched two shutout innings for the Starbirds, setting a
league record for the oldest pitcher (at age 54) to appear in
a game. Teamed up with veteran MSBL World Series catcher
Russ Roy,
the Starbird's battery exceeded a century of life experience, an
attestation to the breadth of the KonaBaseball.com league.
Throughout the day, the Mariners kept hoping for a loss by
either the Angels or the Steelers, and preferably, losses by
both teams. Unfortunately for them, their fate was not in their
own hands, and the Mariners fell to fifth seed in the upcoming
playoffs.
In the final inning, the Angels
suddenly found themselves down by a run. A rally was needed, and a rally is what they
put together, with
Oscar Delgado
hitting a game-ending double.
Mariners' hurler
Larry Elenes
took the win, while the
outstanding play of several Steelers' players, especially infielder
Marcus Hathcock,
has people talking as though Active Steel may be the team
best able to give MVP a serious challenge in the playoffs.
Shiloh Chenoweth
continued to display his durability on the mound for the Steelers,
going the distance to claim the pitching victory. He started off in trouble after
his catcher told him, "Don't give the batters nothing good". Coached by the husband
of an English teacher, and apparently not adjusting for the grammatical error,
Chenoweth
delivered a shopping cart full of pitches right down the middle to his opponents.
The Starbirds took advantage, claiming an early two-run lead.
In the end, however, Starbird Construction's starting pitcher
Mark Sater
fatigued and the "kid" could not finish, so 54-year old veteran
and eldest player in the league
Jim McManus
was called upon in the last
inning. The younger-blooded Active Steel players then proceeded to come from
behind with a five-run rally in their final at-bat, something of a trademark of the
Steelers' style of play in recent weeks.
Starbird's pitcher
Mark Sater,
slated to make his fourth
consecutive appearance at the Men's Senior World Series in Phoenix
next month, recorded the win by a final score of 12-4.
The
Starbirds took an early lead with three runs in the second inning only
to have the Angels post four runs in the third. From there, the contest
remained close until the final inning when the Angels found that same
boost that their major league counterparts in Anaheim have enjoyed
lately.
The Steelers still have a chance in 2002, providing they can beat the
Angels in the final elimination game on September 28th. The winner of
that game will advance to the championship game.
Reliable pitching by
Jorge Perez
of the Angels and
Shiloh Chenoweth
of the Steelers kept the game close. By the middle of the fourth
inning, with a score of 2-1, it was still anyone's ball game. But then,
the Steelers' defensive play unraveled, making several costly errors
that, in the end, sent Active Steel back to the workshop for the winter
where it will undoubtedly retool for 2003.
For the Angels, their day is reflected in the unlucky score. A usually crisp Angels defensive team was error prone
on this day, and their normally effective junk ball pitchers simply got hammered by the MVP Sports sluggers
throughout the contest. For MVP Sports,
Malcolm Lehau
lead the offensive attack.
Baptiste's
pitching
performance was close to perfect, except for three walks and an inadvertent hit batsman.
Gerardo Ibarra
took the loss for the Angels.
Angels Rise To Top of KonaBaseball.com League
In the afternoon game, the Angels outlasted Canardlys 5-2 in a pitchers'
duel. The game went scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Angels' bats
came alive.

Starbirds Fly To Top Of League To Join Angels
On Sunday morning, June 9th, Starbird Construction faced a determined Mariners team,
now playing at full strength with the return of their star shortstop Jake Vancil.
But this day belonged to one of the star senior players of the league Russ Roy, who batted 3 for 4,
including two doubles and four RBIs, to lead his Starbirds to victory. With the 11-1
win, Starbird Construction regains its first place tie with the Angels, who had a bye
this week.
Active Steel On A Winning Streak
In the afternoon game, Active Steel continued its winning ways as Shiloh Chenoweth
earned his second win for the season, 10-4 over Canardlys. The game was tight until
the bottom of the third inning when the Steelers got their second look at
new-to-the-league pitcher Ben Stockly and tagged him. Defensively, catcher
Butch Chatfield played an outstanding game for Active Steel, keeping Canardlys'
base runners in check all afternoon.
A Day For The Catchers
It's interesting to note that both winning teams this week had particularly
strong games by their catchers: Roy and Chatfield. Often, the casual observer of baseball
underestimates the contribution to the game made by the catcher. Serving
as defensive field general, the catcher calls the pitches. It is said that a good catcher
can even make a mediocre pitcher perform like a pretty good one.

Steelers welded the door shut on the Angels hopes for a piece of first place, by the score

Mariners Over Canardlys
In the noon contest, the Mariners displayed top form over Canardlys, breaking the
game open in the third inning with a loaded-bases-clearing double by
Gabe Harris. The
heart of the Mariners' batting order
(Jake Vancil,
Jeffrey Bailey
& Mike Keawe) provided
plenty of punch, each scoring twice to lead their team to a 9-3 victory. Former major
league hurler
Larry Elenes (5-3) recorded the win for the
Mariners over Canardlys' pitcher
Ben Stockly (0-2).
The Two New Teams for Season 2002 Establish Pecking Order
The 3:00 P.M. game featured the newly-formed MVP Sports team who immediately showed Active
Steel that its squad belongs in the KonaBaseball.com league. Members of the Kealakehe High
School coaching staff
Ikaika Baptiste (pitcher) and
Aaron Mori (catcher) put together a
fine inaugural performance. The game started
out rocky for MVP Sports as the Steelers'
first two batters scored (having been hit by a pitch and walked respectively). But then,
Baptiste (1-0) and his sharp defensive infield took control.

Starbird Construction Makes The Most Of The Mariners' Errors
Some days are better than others, whether you are working your
regular job, or enjoying your favorite pastime of baseball. The
Sunday afternoon game is one that the Mariners would like to forget,
and it wasn't all that memorable for the Starbirds either, despite
a final score of 13-3.

Mariners Outlast Angels
After somewhat of a rocky appearance last week, former major
league (Houston Astros) pitcher
Larry Elenes was
back to his
usual form Sunday morning, leading his Mariners team to an
11-5 victory over the Angels. The game was closer than the
score indicates, as the Angels'
Jesse Guzman,
Oscar Delgado and
the
Ibarra brothers
continued their respective batting
streaks. In the final inning, however, the Mariners' bats
really came to life, sparked by
J.D. Campbell,
who launched
a scoring attack that took the wind out from beneath the
Angels' wings.
MVP Sports Remains Undefeated
In the afternoon contest, the KonaBaseball.com league leaders
MVP Sports faced bottom-of-the ladder Canardlys in one of the
most entertaining games of the 2002 season. With former U.H.
Manoa pitcher
Ikaika Baptiste on
the mound, the Canardlys can
hardly see the pitches, let alone hit them, suffering 13 strikeouts
in the contest. But everyone had a good time, and that is what
men's hardball is all about here in Kona.

MVP Sports Sweeps League
After defeating every other team in the league, MVP Sports faced its
final test Sunday morning: former major league (Houston Astros)
pitcher
Larry Elenes
and his Mariners. Once again, MVP Sports showed
dominance 14-4, wrapping up its 2002-B season as the only undefeated
team in the KonaBaseball.com league. Having missed the 2002-A season,
the best that MVP Sports could do was to qualify for the second seed
in the playoffs, slated to begin in two weeks. Led by pitcher
Bully Fergerstrom
(the former HPA star), they came, they saw, and they conquered. Now, the
only question remaining unanswered is whether MVP Sports can maintain
its winning ways throughout the playoffs.
Steelers Hammer Angels
In the noon contest, Active Steel continued to show the league that manager
Randy Chatfield
has his team running on all eight (actually, all nine) cylinders. It seems
as though the Steelers improve with each and every game. After finishing the
2002-A season in second-to-last place, Active Steel won all of its 2002-B games,
except of course for the game against the mighty MVP Sports team. With only one
game left in their regular season, Active Steel presently sits in third position
overall (as far as the seeding for the playoffs is concerned).
Canardly Believe My Eyes
Once upon a time, Starbird Construction's pitcher
Mark Sater
(now 7-2) appeared to be unbeatable, leading his team to the top
spot in the final 2002-A standings. However, the 3:00 P.M. game
this Sunday belonged to the Canardlys, sparked by an
outstanding 4-for-4 batting performance by
Marco Herr.
Pitcher
Ben Stockly
went the distance for Canardlys in a stellar performance, holding off a
last-inning rally by the favored opponents, winning by the final score of 10-7.

The regular season play concluded Sunday, resulting in a tie for third
seeding in the playoffs, scheduled to begin in a fortnight (that's

finish that had the potential of a three-way tie with Active Steel and
the Mariners in the middle of the pack. Batting 4-for-4,
Jose Luis Ibarra
led the attack for the Angels who kept one step away from a spirited
Canardlys team anxious to be the spoilers. Not this day ... final
score, Angels-14, Canardlys-9.
